The toponym Goro derives from Gaurus, an ancient branch of the Po river.
The name itself shows the connection between the little town (born during the 18th century near the Po right embankment) and the water.
The Po river and the Adriatic Sea are precious sources for people who lives in Goro; the river donates beautiful views of uncontaminated nature and the sea offers to the population the possibility to practice fishing.
Every year there is a great number of tourists who choose Goro and Gorino as starting point for an excursion on boat; they are curious about discovering the Delta hidden beauties and they will be joining an expert and well-prepared team who knows the history and the traditions of the land.
SACCA DI GORO
The "Sacca di Goro" is a large inlet with a crescent shape; it covers an area of 2.000 hectares and it is one of the greater brackish waters of the High Adriatic.
It is also a precious part of the Po Delta and it is famous for the production of shellfish, and for the clam fishing in particular. The clam finds a perfect habitat for its growth in this gritty backloth area.
In the Sacca there are also a great number of birds, oysters, mullets, eels, giltheads breams and sea basses.
About half a mile from Goro Harbor, there is a case containing a statue of Saint Antonio, who is the sailors and fishermen protector. Every year in June the statue is carried on boat to the center of the Sacca and there is a great number of tourists joining this event.
SCANNONE DI GORO
The "Scannone", known as "Love Island", is a new strip of land surfaced with the development of the Po river.
The low vegetation that clothes the island is composed by rushes, cane fields, glassworts and tamarisks and a great number of birds use it as a shelter. These birds are the most loved for the birdwatching fans' pictures.
THE OLD LIGHTHOUSE
The Old Lighthouse used to light up the sailors' route. It was built in 1864 near the mouth but during the time the progressives fluviales sediments gradually pushed the lighthouse away, making it useless. Today, the Old Lighthouse has been recovered and turned into a natural observatory along the "Sacca di Goro". It is possible to reach it by sea starting from the Gorino Harbor.
GORO LIGHTHOUSE
It was built in 1950 to replace the nineteenth-century Old Lighthouse that became useless as it was far away from the mouth.
It has a cylindrical base and it is about 72 feet. It has a lantern on top, which has a 10 miles beam of light. Near the Lighthouse there is the guardian house.
Just like the Old Lighthouse, Goro Lighthouse is accessible by sea and represents - with his beauty – one of the main attractions of the area.
